When we think of citrus, it’s usually the oranges and lemons that come to mind.  But….. Don’t underestimate the interesting and impressive GRAPEFRUIT.  Tart and tangy but also a little sweet, these fellas have great nutrient benefits. They are amazing sources of vitamin C and vitamin A, which comes in handy for the cold and flu season, as those vitamins support the immune system.  They are said to be a cross between the orange and pomelo.  They get their name from growing in clusters, like grapes.  Grapefruits are at their best winter through to spring.

Grapefruit skin is always a yellow/pink color, but the flesh are blonde (white-ish) or pink/ruby red.  The red and pink color are due to lycopene which is a carotenoid type of antioxidant.  This is a very effective free radical fighter which helps to reduce damage to cells, where damaged cells can be a cause of cancer.  Grapefruit also contains pectin which is a soluble fibre which can slow down artery plaque buildup as well as it shows to lower LDL cholesterol, as well as triglycerides (esp the Red grapefruit).  Grapefruit can also improve insulin levels.

Add peeled and sliced grapefruit to salads, or as-is for breakfast, cilantro and grapefruit as a salsa,

** IMPORTANT NOTE - Due to it’s effect on the liver, grapefruit and grapefruit juice are known to increase circulating levels of several prescription drugs, including statins.  If taking prescriptions, ask your pharmacist or  doctor about consuming regular amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
