I feel a need to talk about mental health.  It seems the past few months, it has been an area that is so critical, especially with our current living conditions and changes in how we are feeling about our situations.

Life is quite different these days and no one is unaffected by the restrictions and the worry caused by a pandemic and its ripple effect.  We all have areas that are not working as well in our lives as what it could be.  That said, for me, and likely others, there were things that were not working well even before this pandemic.  I think it is safe to say there will always be things that are easy and things that are not.  We learn to fix it or adapt.  That is resiliency.

Resiliency enables us to develop mechanisms for protection against experiences which could be overwhelming, it helps us to maintain balance in our lives during difficult or stressful periods, and can also protect us from the development of some mental health difficulties and issues

What if we can’t, or don’t have the energy, or not know what it is we need in order to get through a tough time?  Maybe you have kids that are showing signs of feeling low?  Likely ourselves or someone we are close to shows signs of needing help.

First recognizing that every day there are ups and downs, we all have them.  Comparing ourselves to others and feeling like things are not fair keeps us stuck in moving forward.

Mental health can take a deeper hit when we loose the ability to see our ups and downs and move through them.

This is a big topic, and my intention here is to give some ideas on how to support brain health, as well as see what could be happening and lessen the fear and deep feelings.  Talking about what is going on and getting help is a great place to start.  There is nothing to be ashamed of.

Brain health is like body health.  When our bodies get sick or has inflammation or an injury, we seek help with solutions and those that can lessen those symptoms and correct the issue at the source.  The same things should be done when we are struggling with our brain health in order to support our mental health.

When I say mental health it can mean so many things - low feelings, depression, anxiety, fear, sleeplessness, over active, low function, memory, Alzheimer's, and injuries like concussion, and diagnosis of many other types.

So if we feel low and less functional, or we, or someone we know, has a challenge or diagnosis, there are supports we can use.  Diet, professional support, exercise like walking, positive influences and getting to a possible root cause are all helpful.  Similar in the way of how we would support and correct our body health, we may find that brain health can be similar in some ways.

I will have more info over the coming weeks on what has been studied and found to be helpful, specifically in the way of diet and nutrients in the area of mental health improvements.

Knowing that diet can have a huge role, looking a specific types of foods and nutrients to show what is possible will be presented.

Please make sure you, or someone you, know gets help from a health professional if struggling with feelings that are more than what seems normal.

Have a good week,

Lisa
