The cooler fall air makes us naturally crave and look for warm and hearty foods.  Those foods are in tune with the seasons if you look at what is harvested and available this time of year such as root veggies like carrots and beets, sweet and regular potatoes, and squashes like pumpkin, butternut, etc.  These are also our veggies that are of the starch type.  We are meant to eat these hearty foods this time of year in warm and amazing dishes like roasted veggies and soups as well as the new harvest of apples for apple and cinnamon oatmeal and so on.

We are wise to pay attention to those seasonal cravings and keep it real with the natural quality and quantity of those foods.  Unprocessed and straight from farms, these starch types of foods are loaded with fibre and nutrients.  That fibre helps to keep the blood sugar impact of those starches in proper ranges.  The fibre is also just what our helpful and important gut bacteria love to feed on and keeps them happy, which actually also keeps our mood happy as well.  The addition of spices and herbs also boosts our health including our immune systems and digestion.  Garlic, onions, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon are just a few examples that are incredibly warming additions to our meals in the fall and winter.  Set some time aside and make a few batches of sweet potato soups to enjoy on your busy weekday evenings.  Your immune system well thank you, as will your tummy!
