This mashed yam dish is simpler and quicker than a traditional yam casserole but still full of cozy, seasonal flavours. Naturally sweet yams with a little cinnamon have that sweet fall flavour we love. But the real magic? The crunchy, homemade candied pecans on top add a delightful texture and sweetness that take this dish to the next level. It’s an easy yet indulgent side that pairs beautifully with any holiday spread!
4 large yams, peeled and cubed
4 tbsp unsalted butter
1/4 cup heavy cream (or milk for a lighter version)
1 - 2 tbsp maple syrup (optional)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Salt and pepper to taste
For Candied Pecans:
1/2 cup pecans
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp butter
1/4 tsp cinnamon
Cook the Yams: Boil yams in salted water until tender (15-20 minutes). Drain and mash with butter, cream or milk, maple syrup (if desired), cinnamon, salt, and pepper.
Candied Pecans: In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add pecans, brown sugar, and cinnamon, stirring until sugar melts and coats the nuts (about 3-4 minutes). Spread on parchment paper to cool.
Serve: Transfer mashed yams to a serving dish and top with the candied pecans for a sweet, crunchy garnish! Enjoy.
